To help decipher some of the terms used in wine tasting (and to help you impress your friends at the dinner table!), we have put together some useful information about tasting and the wines themselves.

The Wines of the Piedmont
(January 2005)

We tasted 8 wines from the Piedmont region from across the board and you will find all of the tasting notes below.

Wine 1: Brachetto d’Acqui 2003 Contero
A delightfully pale red sparkling wine made in the same way as Moscato d’Asti – very refreshing at just 5.5% alcohol. Oozing sweet fresh strawberries. £9.99

Wine 2: Just 2000 La Giustiniara
A serious complex white using the cortese grape. Ripe citrus fruit, mingling with judiciously used French oak made for an intense, rich, almost Burgundian style of wine. £22.50

Wine 3: Dolcetto 2003 Vajra
Forward and fruit driven, with a lot of ripe spicy fruit and soft tannins.

Wine 4: Barbera d’Asti 2001 Tere Caude, Ca’ dell Matt
Wonderful, spiced berry fruits, good balance of oak and a complex finish – star wine of the tasting. £9.99

Wine 5: Barbera d’Alba 2000 Massolino
Viewed as expensive relative to the Tere Caude, but showing a traditional elegance and charm with mature cherry fruit and well integrated tannins.

Wine 6: Nebbiolo d’Alba 2003 Vajra
Another highly rated wine with good fruit and balance and clearly a wine with potential. £13.99

Wine 7: Barolo Bricco Viole 1999 Vajra
Still young with earthy gamey fruits pervading with still quite noticeable tannic structure. £37.00

A real star. Wonderfully earthy, rich and complex with truffle and spice aromas backed up with a long, distinct rich palate. £49.00
